NZ Provincial Barbarians v British & Irish Lions – Full Match Statistics

The tour opener was supposed was supposed to be a leg stretcher, a jog in the park. It almost turned into a tourist mugging.

People were saying that the team wouldn”t have much time together before kick-off. The squad was only assembling with just a handful of days together, a short time in which to bond a s a unit, work out tactics, train, live together, create some kind of culture. Generally they were going to be disadvantaged in trying to get up to speed to become competitive first game together against hungry competition, and on the night probably wouldn’t stand a chance.

Yes, they were saying that. About both teams. But on the day it was the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians who nearly went from a scratch side of NPC and Heartland players to Lion killers.

The Lions were flat. They were not hungry. And they very nearly lost this match. A match that should never have been remotely close.
